Changing Blades on Automower
Blade Change Frequency
The blades on the Automower should be checked regularly and replaced when they are blunt. This is also important because each blade may wear off differently, which can cause an imbalance of the cutting disc if left unattended for a long time. More importantly, the cut quality of the grass will be heavily degraded if the blades are unattended for too long. Sometimes, when the blades are left unchanged for too long, they thin out over time and start bending, which causes them to interfere with the cutting blade assembly.
It is more important to have good condition and sharp blades on a robotic lawnmower than on a conventional mower. It is the principle of the cutting the grass instead of knocking it off that makes this difference. The double-edged blades together with the technology that rotates the blade disc in both directions increase the life of the blades. To keep the blades sharp for as long as possible it is important to keep the lawn free from branches, small stones and other objects. Worn blades should not be ground. This is to prevent the mowing system from becoming imbalanced. Poor or dull blades can result in the grass bending instead of being mown, the tops become frayed and the mower may find it difficult to mow a large working area.
The Automower cutting disc rotates both ways to maximize and use both sides of the blades as much as possible, to increase over all life of the blades. However, depending on the number of hours of usage, the blades should be replaced regularly. The table below will help towards identifying a general timeline when the blades may need replacement based on the number of hours the mower runs on a weekly basis. It is also important to ONLY use Husqvarna branded blades to maintain the balance of the cutting disc. 3rd party blades may not perform as well as Husqvarna branded blades.
No. of Runtime Hours per Week | Blade Replacement Frequency |
More than 60 hours | Approximate 3-4 weeks |
Between 40 to 60 hours | Approximately 5-6 weeks |
Less than 40 hours | Approximately 6-8 weeks |
The table above only provides a rough estimate of the frequency of blade change. It is still recommended that the blades are checked once every 2 weeks and changed if it is determined that they are very blunt or damaged. The frequency of blade change can vary based on the terrain, type of grass and seasonal changes.
Blade Change Process
The following steps should be followed when changing the blades of the Automower,
Step 1: Set the mower main switch to ‘0’ of ‘Off’ position. This is important to avoid any injury from the blade disc. Now, turn over the mower – Place a rug or towel underneath to avoid scratches.
Step 2: Ensure that gloves are worn during this process. Align the Disc such that the holes on the disc align with the screws of the blades.
Step 3: While holding the blade with one hand, use the screw driver to unscrew the screw until the blade comes off loose. Discard the blade and the old screw. All blades and screws must be replaced at the same time to ensure the cutting system is balanced
Step 4: Place the new blade and such that the holes align and using the new screw tighten the screw. Do not force tighten the screw as the blades are supposed to pivot and move freely.
Step 5: Repeat Step 4 for the other blades and once completed, the mower can be put back to ON position and tested for mowing.
